Founder and Managing Partner, New Atlantic Ventures
John Backus is a seasoned technology investor and entrepreneur with 25+ years of experience investing in and managing rapidly growing high-technology companies. Prior to founding New Atlantic Ventures in 1998, Backus was a founding investor and the President and Chief Executive Officer of InteliData Technologies, a Fast 50 growth company in both 1997 and 1998. Backus led InteliData’s predecessor, US Order, through a successful $65 million IPO in 1995. He currently manages a $225 million venture portfolio at New Atlantic Ventures.
Backus serves on the board of directors of MPowerPlayer, Ftrans, Koofers, Qliance and RemitPro. He is former Chairman of the Wolf Trap Foundation Board of Directors and the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) Board of Directors, the founding Chairman and current board member of the NVTC TechPAC, and was appointed by former Virginia Governor Mark Warner to co-chair the Virginia Research and Technology Advisory Commission, which he served on for four years. Backus began his career at Bain & Co. and Bain Capital, where he was the first Bain & Co. management consultant to take a full-time operating role (as CFO) in a portfolio company.
Former Chairman and CEO, Network Solutions
Mike Daniels rose to industry prominence with SAIC where he served as Senior VP and Sector VP from 1986-2004. He helped build SAIC to $10 billion in annual revenues with 45,000 employees. While at SAIC, Daniels purchased Network Solutions for $4.7 million in March 1995. As Chairman and CEO, he led Network Solutions through a successful IPO in 1997 and a second offering in 1999. In 2000, Daniels led a follow-on offering of $2.3 billion, one of the largest technology equity offerings in history. He was instrumental in the sale of Network Solutions on SAIC’s behalf for $19.6 billion.
In 2004, Daniels joined the board of directors of Apogen Technologies. He worked closely with the executive management team and private equity firm Arlington Capital Partners to build Apogen into a $200 million business. Apogen was sold in 2005 to QinetiQ for $300 million. As Chairman and CEO, Daniels worked with the Mobile365 Board of Directors to reposition the company, which was sold to Sybase for $417 million in November 2006.
Daniels also has served on the board of directors of Telcordia Technologies and VeriSign. He worked with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense, serving on the United States Trade Representatives International Investment Policy Advisory Commission, as a U.S. National Commissioner for UNESCO, as a White House Advisor on International Technology, and as a Senior Advisor to the National Security Council (NSC).
Daniels currently serves on the board of directors of Sybase, Globallogic, Initiate Systems, the Logistics Management Institute, the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC), the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Washington Board of Trade.
General Partner, Grotech Ventures
Steve Fredrick is a General Partner with Grotech Ventures where he leads investments in the software, wireless and digital media sectors. He is active on several portfolio company boards, including LogiXML, Omnilink Systems, RollStream and TRAFFIQ. His career spans engineering roles, entrepreneurial company building and early-stage investing. Prior to Grotech, Fredrick was a General Partner with Novak Biddle Venture Partners where he made significant contributions to the success of numerous companies. He began his career in research and development with IBM, and then joined a venture-funded software company in the document imaging space called Vantage Solutions, which was acquired in 1994. He subsequently co-founded software development firm MartinScott before making his transition to the venture business in 1997. Fredrick has served in interim operating roles with several portfolio companies upon request. He has also been instrumental in the launch of StartUpHire, an online job board listing thousands of opportunities at venture-backed companies.
Fredrick earned his BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering, magna cum laude, from Virginia Tech and served for several years as an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business. He is a frequent speaker on entrepreneurship and venture investing.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Invincea
Anup Ghosh, Ph.D., is Founder and Chief Scientist of Invincea, Inc. Ghosh was previously Senior Scientist and Program Manager in the Strategic Technology Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) where he managed an extensive portfolio of information assurance and information operations programs.
Prior to DARPA, Ghosh served as Vice President of Research at Cigital, Inc. and as principal investigator on contracts from DARPA, NSA, and NIST’s Advanced Technology Program. He has written more than 40 peer-reviewed conference and journal articles. Ghosh is also author of three books on computer network defense. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and serves on the editorial board of IEEE Security & Privacy magazine and has been guest editor for IEEE Software and IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. Ghosh is currently co-editor of IEEE Security & Privacy magazine’s Special Issue on Cloud Computing Security. Ghosh holds an appointment as Research Professor in the Center for Secure Information Systems at George Mason University, and he served as a member of the Committee on Information Assurance for Network-Centric Naval Forces for the Naval Studies Board, National Research Council.
For his contributions to DoD’s information assurance, Ghosh was awarded the Frank B. Rowlett Trophy for Individual Contributions by the National Security Agency in 2005. He was also awarded the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service for his contributions while at DARPA, and the Hobart Newell Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Profession in 2005 from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Ghosh also received the IEEE’s Millennium Medal for Outstanding Contributions to E-Commerce Security. Ghosh completed is Ph.D. and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering at the University of Virginia and holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Harbert Venture Partners
Tom Roberts joined Harbert in 2002 as a founding member of the HVP Investment Team. HVP is the early growth stage venture capital arm of Harbert Management Corporation, one of the leading asset management firms in the Southeast with approximately $3 billion in committed capital under management.
He currently serves on the boards of AireWire, ControlScan, Invincea and JackBe, and is a board observer at Clarabridge. He also led HVP’s investments in and served on the board of Agility Healthcare, an RFID software company which was sold in an attractive exit to GE Healthcare in September 2008. In December 2010, he was selected to serve a two year term as a Venture Capital Consultant to the Defense Venture Catalyst Initiative (DeVenCi), a Department of Defense (DoD) program to identify and accelerate adoption of emerging commercial technologies by DoD constituents. He is also a board member of the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association (“MAVA”).
Before joining Harbert, Roberts was a senior investment banker for Wachovia Securities (and predecessor firms First Union Securities and Wheat First Butcher Singer), where he originated and successfully executed over forty public and private equity and M&A advisory transactions for clients in the technology, telecom and healthcare sectors. He was a founding member of First Union’s Technology Investment Banking Group. Prior to investment banking, he led engagements for Markowitz & McNaughton, a strategy consulting firm based in Washington DC, specializing in competitive analysis, market opportunity assessment, benchmarking and acquisition buy-side search and due diligence services for Fortune 500 clients. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Virginia.
